Prof. M.Qasim Jan, Adviser COMSTECH and President Pakistan Academy of Sciences, was invited as key speaker on the occasion of World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) hosted by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).
WSPD is celebrated each year on November 10. The objective of this day is to renew global commitment to Science for peace, development and benefit of the society. It Illustrates relevance of science in the lives of people and aims to engage wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.
The theme of this year’s WSPD was “Science – A Human right”. This theme was selected to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Art. 27), Article 1 of which says, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” .
Dr. Qasim Jan elaborated on various aspects of science and technology that are increasingly involved in protection, and access of some key human rights, such as freedom of expression, education, food security and health. His talk delved into complex relationship science has to human rights and peaceful development.
It was concluded that understanding of Science, and reaping its benefits, indeed, is itself a human right. Science should be available to all strata of the society irrespective of cast, creed and color.
