COMSTECH is hosting webinar on World Food Day with themes of Grow, Nourish and Sustain together with UPSIGN and Pakistan Academy of Sciences. The event will be highlighting the need for taking immediate actions to protect our food system to produce enough food in quantity and quality. The food system is facing tremendous pressure from climate change causing the depleting natural resources, soil degradation, water shortage and increasing threat from invasive species of pests and diseases. The COVID pandemic has already posed a serious threat to our food system, we need to develop resilient and holistic food system to fight hunger.
The event celebrates the World Food Day with a keynote speech from World Food Prize Laurette, Prof Ratan Lal. His contribution to agriculture has directly benefited over 500 million smallholder farmers in the developing world. His work mainly improving soil health through organic matter, improving intensive agriculture facing stagnant productivity. “If soils are not restored, crops will fail even if rains do not...and humanity will suffer even with great scientific strides. Political stability and global peace are threatened because of soil degradation, food insecurity, and desperateness,” said Lal. “For future generations, it is very important that soil resources must be protected, preserved, restored and enhanced. That is where the future of humanity lies”.
This event is open to scientists, policy makers, academicians, students, supporting agriculture and food development across the globe and particularly all the member OIC states.

Prof Ratan Lal, The World Food Prize Winner 2020
Dr Lal is a Professor of Soil and Director, Carbon Management and Sequestration Center · School of Environment and Natural Resource at Ohio State University. His work focuses on the potential of soils to help resolve global issues such as climate change, food security and water quality. He was awarded the 2019 Japan Prize 'for the sustainable soil management for global food security and mitigation of climate change.
Dr Tina Barsby OBE
Dr Barsby is Director and Chief Executive Officer, NIAB. She is a plant geneticist well-known for her scientific achievements and significant experience in the agricultural crop sector. She led and managed multifaceted, product driven, research and development programmes in North America and UK/mainland Europe.

Prof Khan is former Vice Chancellor of University of Agriculture Faisalabad. He is a distinguished National Professor and got the Pakistan’s highest civil award, Sitara-E-Imtiaz (Civil Award, Government of Pakistan) (2012).

Hon. Shandana is Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) network and a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan
Hon. Shandana Chairs the Sub-committee on Agriculture products focusing on women farmers, workers & youth. She also heads the Parliamentary taskforce on SDG 5 and is helping develop Pakistan’s first SDG road map.
