President for united efforts by Muslim countries
to secure bright future

Address to Honourable Ambassadors/High Commissioners of OIC Member States on 20th February 2019 at Dinner hosted by COMSTECH
President Dr Arif Alvi, Chairman COMSTECH said that the Muslim world, which was facing the grave challenges of conflicts and growing population, would have to make united efforts to secure a bright future for them.
He was speaking at a dinner hosted by OIC Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) in honour of Ambassadors from the countries of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad, Pakistan.
The President said that as no country in the world could achieve the goals of development without modernization in the area of research, the Muslim world would have to focus on Information Technology.
He said that with a long history of the utilization of mineral resources by human beings, the golden era of human history started after industrial revolution.
The President said that as it was an era of modern information technology, the industrial development and investment also required change of mindset. He said that the present government was taking necessary steps for the promotion of country’s exports.
The President said that with the Islamic countries having insignificant role in the promotion of modern technology, the Muslim world would have to come forward in the area of science and technology to fulfill the requirements of this modern Information Technology era.
He lauded the efforts of COMSTECH for playing its role in the promotion of education and technology.
Earlier the Coordinator General of COMSTECH Dr. Tariq Banuri addressed the august gathering and outlined the history, envisaged role and contributions of COMSTECH as the focal point of S&T cooperation between OIC countries. He mentioned the key ongoing programmes of COMSTECH in capacity building, HRD and technical support via research grants, scientific awards, thematic workshops in frontier areas, Inter-Islamic S&T Networks and preparation of reports on key issues etc.
He also highlighted the significance of the 1st OIC S&T Summit held in Astana in 2017 and the additional responsibilities entrusted to COMSTECH for realization of its goals. In this context he expressed appreciation for the cooperation of other S&T intuitions of OIC and informed the gathering that COMSTECH is organizing a meeting of the Steering Committee for Implementation of the STI Agenda 2026 approved at Astana.
Finally, the Coordinator General, while thanking the honourable guests, requested them to convey to their respective governments the need for greater support to COMSTECH, both human and financial, to enable it to fulfill the heightened expectations of the Member States in the light of increasing emphasis on Science, Technology and Innovation.
Prior to the Dinner, the Coordinator General of COMSTECH Dr. Tariq Banuri called upon the President Dr. Arif Alvi and discussed with him the ongoing activities as well as the planning of COMSTECH for the 2nd OIC Summit on S&T.
